Revelation Effect Mentalism and Mind Reading
Elemental An elemental is composed of one of the four elements, and is immune to poison, sleep, paralysis, and stunning. Elementals have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet. A slain elemental cannot be raised or resurrected, though a wish or miracle spell can restore its life. Transformed ele-mentalists do have a clear front and back, and so are still subject to critical hits and flanking. Elemental Mastery (Ex) The transformed elementalist gains mastery of her element much like an elemental has against transformed air elementalists, airborne creatures suffer a -1 penalty to attack and damage rolls transformed earth elementalists gain a +1 attack and damage bonus if both it and its foe touch the ground against transformed fire elementalists, creatures with the fire subtype suffer a -1 penalty to attack and damage rolls and transformed water elementalists gain a +1 attack and damage bonus if both it and its opponent touch water. Also, the transformed ele-mentalist is immune to the...
ANDERSON ON MENTALISM By George Anderson (NOTE Published in 1949, the author's first book on mentalism, It Must Be Mindreading, has become a mentalism classic. His latest book, the just-released Dynamite Mentalism, is a 15-minute one-man routine that should become a classic in its own right, with anyone who understands audience psychology. , .and can talk intelligently. He has written others on both magic and mentalism, and he has four more slated for early publication. He has written suspense novels, for radio, and for television. He is the author of more half-hour commercially sponsored radio who-done-its than any other writer in the world, A writer by profession, the author is a performer by inclination,) IF THE IMPULSES APPLY Instead of sealed message reading - and I think I know considerable about the subject I now simply ask spectators to concentrate on problems of any kind, but not to discuss their thoughts with anyone else in the audience. If you wish, I continue, you may...
(NOTE The author is widely known among working mentalists everywhere for his first book on mentalism, It Must Be Mindreading, published in 1949. Many consider it to be a classic within the mental field. His latest book, the just-released Dynamite Mentalism, is available through Chicago's Magic, Inc., and has been acclaimed by its reviewers. Known and recognized as a successful writer, he is less widely known as a performer, yet he was a performer long before he became a writer. Presentation (in mentalism), he once wrote, is all-important. A mediocre trick with a good presentation will surpass a superb trick with sloppy production, every time, In this Bonus Insert, he talks about a too-seidom considered aspect of presentation, the value and utilization of a microphone,) 15 TT WORTH IT7 I've had performers tell me that, in buying the wireless microphone, I have invested too much money in something that won't perform an effect in mentalism. From my point of view, these same individuals...
Watch for yet another in Phil Goldstein's color-series books of mentalism. Off the press in April l(i&0, priced at 5, The Violet Book of Mentalism could be the best of the series. Here's a prediction that immediately will be denied. I predict that mentalist Max Maven, a long-time holdout for doing mentalism with cards, will try his hand at a blindfold routine. The shift, which will take place not later than mid-summer of this year, will heat up the perennial arguments concerning the validity of using playing cards in mentalism. If Maven, as T predict, shifts to a blindfold or to a question act, many will see it as a breaching of the last bastien of card mentalism.
This process is described in The Book of Zohar as part of the processes that will occur when Israel returns to its land And the children of Ishmael are destined to evoke great wars in the world, and the children of Edom will gather over them and they will wage war with them (Zohar, VaEra, item 203).
(NOTEi The author, a popular columnist for maglcdom's Linking Ring magazine, is widely-known as an entertaining performer, Innovator, and lecturer. His wit and presentation prowess made him the runaway hit of the P.C.A.M. convention in Portland, where he demonstrated the ability, rare among both mentalists and magicians, to totally make an audience believe . Contending that belief is the essence of deception, he maintains that it is not enough for a performer to pretend that something is not what it appears. The performer, too, must believe it, as a first step in creating belief among the spectators. And that's what this Bonus Insert is all about.) CAUSES OF DISBELIEF Mentalists, as well as magicians, spend a goodly portion of their A NECESSITY IN MENTALISM This all becomes doubly apropos in mentalism, where the But I wonder if I should not end with a word of caution, too. I would wonder if the reality warp In mentalism is not also fraught with its own special periL Mentalists are a...
Elemental Resistance (Ex) As the elementalist gains levels in this class, she becomes resistant to spells based on her attuned element at 4th level she gains a +1 magic bonus to her saving throws against all spells in the elementalist spell list for her specialized element, and every level afterward gains another +1 bonus, up to a maximum of +6 at 9th level. However, she also becomes more vulnerable to the opposing element at 4th level elementalists receive a -1 magic penalty to their saving throws against spells from her prohibited elemental school, as given in the elementalist spell list, and every level afterward take another -1 penalty up to a maximum of -6 at 9th level. Thus, a 6th-level fire elementalist gains a +3 to her saves against fire elementalist spells, but also takes a -3 to saving throws against water ele-mentalist spells. Rebuke Turn Elementals (Su) The elementalist has the power to hold elementals of her element in awe by Rebuking them, and drive off elementals of...
Erickson applied this insight to his hypnotic technique, by recognizing the significance of messages he himself didn't realize he was giving. A similar nalysis has frequently been applied to anecdotal reports of cases of apparent telepathy, but where 'cold reading', or the skill of gathering information urreptitiously through subtle but conventional sensory clues, appears to be a ikely factor.
This certainly could have been explained in fewer pages, but I felt it was more important to pass the finer points on than to simply give the method. The verbal convincers allow the effect to be more than just a series of outs. Work on them and you will have a strong piece of mentalism that can be prepared in less than five minutes, and it requires no sleight-of-hand, or any expensive props.
MIND-READING, AND BEYOND What Mind-Reading is. The two phases of Mind-Reading. Mind-Reading with physical contact and without physical contact. Why the scientific investigators make the distinction. Why science has been over-cautious and how it falls short of the full understanding of contact Mind-Reading. How the thought-waves flow along the nerves of the projector and recipient. Like telegraphy over wires, as compared with the wireless method. How to learn by actual experience, and not alone by reading books. How to experiment for yourself and how to obtain the best results in Mind-Reading. The working principles of Mind-Reading stated. Full directions and instruction given for the successful performance of the interesting feats. This lesson is really a little manual of practical instruction in Mind-Reading, and the higher phases of Thought-Transference. The person carefully studying and applying the principles taught therein should become very proficient in both private and public...
Shen found himself with a thirst to learn more, but no library could provide new information. So he traveled west with a silk caravan, and tried to find a master in the ways of elemental magic. When he came upon an ele-mentalist namedJulius, Shen presented himself as his disciple, and Julius trained him in the ways of earth magic. Improved Elemental Affinity (Ex) The transformed ele-mentalist gains a +4 circumstance modifier on all Charisma-based skill and Charisma ability checks when interacting with other elemental creatures and with other elementalists who are attuned to the same element. This stacks with Elemental Affinity, giving Shen a +6 total bonus.
I remember a time when a mentalist friend of mine had no mercy on a newspaper reporter. I showed the reporter a trick, and she took me into the next office to repeat it for a friend. While we were gone, he calmly unscrewed her Cross pen and bent the ink cartridge inside. Redoing the pen, he joined the group as if nothing had happened. Needless to say, when the time was just right, he performed a miracle
10 TIPS ON WARMING UP THOSE COLD READINGS By Orville Meyer (NOTE As well-known to readers of the old JINX and PHO IX publications as he is to readers of MAGICK, the author has spent a lifetime in magic and mentalism. He is a skilled cold reader, an accomplished graphologist, and an expert on astrology. He also is a professional mentalist. In this Bonus Insert, he touches upon an aspect of cold reading about which little has been written.) Much has been written about the techniques of cold readings. Indeed, the pages of MAGICK, the many Robert Nelson books, and other books of more recent vintage provide step-by-step instruction on methods for giving a stranger life readings that will amaze by their accuracy. But when the cold reading is completed, have you stopped to analyze what you really have accomplished Where cold readings are leading you much more than just a cold reading. To the contrary, your real measure of success will be your ability to provide warm readings. Indeed, if you...
Few mental effects can match the visual power and excitement of this audience-proven presentation, devised and used by one of mental ism's hardest-working female psychic entertainers. The effect enables her to spotlight her near-intuitive ability to deliver incisive one- and two-line readings to various members of an audience.
Sooner or later, in any gathering of psychic entertainers, you'll encounter an argument over the role, if any, of playing cards in mental ism. Tarot cards, long used by gypsies and other mystics for fortunetelling, are one of the most provocative and colorful props that can be used by the close-up psychic entertainer. The psychic entertainer who is searching for a measuring cup of useful information finds himself, or herself, afloat in the Pacific Ocean, awash in the Red Sea.
As with many of the items in this book, this effect may be presented as either a bizarre performance or as a standard piece of mentalism. That will be determined by the scripting that you may wish to create for each effect. One thing that you should know about this routine is that it is definitely a performance piece. It should be rehearsed like a play, but with three separate endings. (Actually four endings, but we will get back to that in a minute.) I would suggest paying close attention to the scripting throughout the DECEPTION section because it is very important to the routine.
But by the same token, if you are going to be a Magician then you must perform things which Go Beyond Skill. Ultimately, you either perform magic, or you do not. The interesting thing is, if we really were magicians, we probably wouldn't become entertainers, much less perform any of the effects in our current repertoire (Well, maybe the Miser's Dream.) Although I've never done mentalism, I would assume that dealing with the unknown regions of the mind makes it easier for a Mentalist to stay in character than someone who performs magic with everyday objects.
It is possible, though not advisable, to incorporate a Mental Powers plug-in (such as Atomik Psioniks) along side Atomik Magick in a campaign. The new edition of Atomik Magick allows for mental abilities to be simulated by magical powers (see Psychic Magic under New Magic Systems). However, if in your game world mental powers indeed follow completely different laws of nature than
With a modicum of thought, a twist in presentation, and use of ESP symbol cards, many tricks with playing cards can be adapted to mentalism. Insiders are predicting that the Psychic Entertainers Association will schedule its 1031 annual meeting on the West Coast. Lectures included one on Psychometry , by Tony Raven Gutsy Mentalism, by Wei-uer and Telepathy Plus, by Bob Siepiel-ski.
The 1990 Psychic Entertainers Association Meeting of the Minds in Scottsdale, Ariz., drew rave reviews from attendees, while setting a new attendance high. If Hollywood ever wanted to cast the perfect mentalist, I suspect it would want someone with Monserrat's accent AND the lean, hawkish looks of Jonathan Cooke.
A low level form of mind reading where only emotions can be detected. The target must be in line of sight (LOS may be viewed by any sense, including remote or other magical senses). Each Level gives 1D6 of Effect. The Effect Level (DC rolled - Mental Defense) determines how much is learned. Range is LOS. Mind Reading
This last action must be done as is, with confidence and faith, because it is real and not fictitious. Neither mentalism nor suggestion exist in this practice. You must get up very carefully from your bed, so as not to wake yourself. Then, you must leave your room by walking as naturally as you do when you travel to your work daily. Before leaving your room, you must perform a little jump with the intention of floating. If you ioat, then direct yourself towards the Gnostic Church, or to the house of the sick person whom you need to heal. Yet, if you do nof float when performing the little jump, then, return into your bed and repeat the experiment.
Books hy Annemann, Corinda, Nelson, and Larsen are classics in mentalism, and every mentalist should have access to them. But there are books in my library that I have occasion to research more often. I am surprised, only, that so few mentalists know o f them, The books contain no tricks. Yet I find more practical mentalism in them than is contained in some of the more acceptable reference works. According to Marks, Larry Becker was the first to Introduce the special pen and plastic to mentalism.
