WEH ADDENDUM This is the Preliminary Invocation placed in the Goetia in the Mathers transcription (Not translation ) by Crowley. This invocation is not a part of the original text, but comes to us from the Greco-Egyptian period of perhaps the 6th century. The Goetia is itself a small portion of the Lemegeton or Lesser Key of Solomon. This Preliminary Evocation is altered in Liber Samekh over that published in the Goetia . The conjurations given by Dr. Dee (vide Equinox I, VIII) are in a language called Angelic, or Enochian. Its source has hitherto baffled research, but it is a language and not a jargon, for it possesses a structure of its own, and there are traces of grammar and syntax.
It (Le., Enochian is not a jargon it has a grammar and syntax of its own. It is very much more sonorous, stately and impressive than even Greek or Sanskrit, and the English translation, though in places difficult to understand, contains passages of a sustained sublimity that Shakespeare, Milton and the Bible do not surpass. Thomas' account of the meaning of Aristotle's definition forces him to construe the grammar of the definition in such a way that the clause introduced by the dative singular feminine relative pronoun he has as its antecedent, in two cases, the neuter participle tou ontos, and in the third, the neuter substantive adjective tou dunatou. It is true that this particular feminine relative pronoun often had an adverbial sense to which its gender was irrelevant, but in the three statements of the definition of motion there is no verb but estin. If the clause is understood adverbially, then, the sentence must mean something like if motion is a potentiality, it is the actuality of a potentiality. Whatever that might mean, it could at any rate not be a definition of motion. Thus the clause must be understood adjectivally, and Thomas must make the relative pronoun dependent upon a word with which it does not agree in gender. The Underworld in ancient Sumer was known by many names, among them ABSU or Abyss , sometimes as Nar Mattaru, the great Underworld Ocean, and also as Cutha or KUTU as it is called in the Enuma Elish (the Creation Epic of the Sumerians). The phonetic similarity between Cutha and KUTU and Chthonic, as well as Cthulhu, is striking. Judging by a Sumerian grammar at hand, the word KUTULU or Cuthalu (Lovecraft's's Cthulhu Sumerianised) would mean The Man of KUTU (Cutha) the Man of the Underworld Satan or Shaitan, as he is known to the Yezidis (whom Crowley considered to be the remnants of the Sumerian Tradition). Throughout the book, I include excerpts from my out-of-body journals that illustrate key points. This is how cuneiform script struck the first Europeans to lay eyes on it. Once deciphered archaeologists learned these records contained cosmological myths, epic poems, histories of kings, astronomical tables, mathematical formulas, grammar and vocabulary school texts. Most prized of all were their recollections of the comings, goings and doings of the gods.
This key is found in the idea behind the word which describes these texts, grimoire. It is a French word meaning grammar book. It was expected that a student of magick would have a teacher to instruct him or her in the subtleties of the various planes of existence, and how to alter them through the knowledge and use of universal laws. Grimoires were not meant to give out every bit of magickal knowledge. They were designed to aid a student's memory. They are, in a sense, nothing more than notes.

There were no comma's in the original edition, so did Jesus say that the criminal would be in paradise today (ie. ascend to heaven on his death) or did Jesus simply say the criminal would be in paradise sometime and simply use a turn of phrase to intimate how he was speaking, I say unto thee today . This is a clear example of how modern grammatical composition, when added into the Bible, can be used to produce misleading theology. In the above example, we see how certain denominations using modern translations are able to use the first form of the verse in an attempt to prove that we go straight to Heaven when we die. Even though this concept is based on a dubious use of grammar, especially dubious if we understand that the grammar was added in by translators for easy reading nothing more, nothing less.

The student would do well to acquire either Geoffrey James' Enochian Magick of John Dee and or Robert Turner's Elizabethan Magic and Heptarchia Mystica as a textbook of the system. Many of the axioms for understanding the logic of Enochian magick are derived from the works of John Dee14 and the Spirit Actions themselves15 , so the student is advised to begin collecting this material, as they are able. Beyond that, the serious practitioner of the Enochian system will want to scrutinize many of the other contributions, but these will be dealt with in turn in the following overview. In order to fully appreciate and operate the intricacies of Enochian magick, a basic understanding of Euclidean geometry, astronomy, astrology, logic, grammar and the renaissance magikal point of view is vital.
